Deze Amerikaanse film noir naar een roman van Raymond Chandler is de eerste film waarin de zgn. POV (of subjectieve) camera consequent wordt doorgevoerd. We zien Philip Marlowe die gespeeld wordt door Robert Montgomery alleen wanneer hij in de spiegel kijkt. Voor de rest zien we zijn schaduw, zijn hand(en) en de sigarettenrook die hij uitblaast. Maar de meeste tijd zien we zijn tegenspelers recht in de camera kijken in vaak vinnige ‘Chandler‘ dialogen met de sarcastische privédetective. Persoonlijk vind ik die subjectieve camera een tamelijk vermoeiend experiment. Bij elke bezoek van Marlowe zien we eerst de camera de voordeur naderen als bij een interactief computerspel. Een voordeel is dat we Robert Montgomery nauwelijks zien, zodat je in gedachten toch naar de enige echte Philip Marlowe kunt kijken : Humphrey Bogart.

The gimmick was that the audience would see only what the character saw, and MGM in its promotion of the film claimed that it was the first of its kind and the most revolutionary style of film since the introduction of the talkies. The movie was also rare for having virtually no musical soundtrack.
