Historian Simon Schama joins forces with National Portrait Gallery curators to create five new displays exploring the development, character and meanings of British portraiture.
 
Staged throughout the Gallery, portraits from across the Collection will be displayed for the first time by theme rather than chronology, taking a long view of the history of portraits in each room. Each display will comprise a cross-period selection in various media, exploring one of the following themes: Power, Love, Fame, People and Self.
 
Simon Schama’s The Face of Britain will broadcast on BBC Two in September coincide with the broadcast of a new five-part TV series on BBC Two and the publication of an accompanying book by Viking/Penguin Random House this autumn.

In februari maakte ik een kleine kopie naar een portret dat Thomas Lawrence in 1789 schilderde van William Linley op 18-jarige leeftijd. Vorige week maakte ik een iets grotere olieverfschets in de a la prima techniek.

William Linley
Born in Bath, Somerset, on 27 January 1771 Linley was the youngest child of Thomas Linley and Mary Johnson (1729–1820). Educated at Harrow and then St Paul’s School, additional tutoring in musical disciplines was provided by his father and Carl Friedrich Abel. He joined the British East India Company and was in India 1790-5 and 1800-5, holding a writership at their College in Madras. He retired from the company in 1810 and devoted himself to singing, composing glees and songs and writing literature. He bequeathed his collection of family portraits to Dulwich Picture Gallery.
