Willibrord (658-739) en de verbreiding van het Christendom in Nederland

Afgelopen maandag werd de Canon van Nederland gepresenteerd, die bestaat uit vijftig vensters waardoor de Nederlander zijn nationaal zelfbewustzijn bij elkaar kan gluren. Door het derde venster kijken we naar de verbreiding van het Christendom in ons land

Dagobert
Dagobert I bouwt de stad Utrecht op
Vanuit het zuiden en het westen Met de Merovingische Franken komt het christendom in de zesde eeuw vanuit het zuiden naar midden-Nederland. Clovis is de eerste Merovingische koning die zich in 495 tot het christendom heeft bekeerd. Zijn latere opvolger Dagobert I laat in de stad Utrecht een kerkje te bouwen, om de kerstening van de Friezen in gang te zetten. Rond dezelfde tijd komen Engelse monniken, waaronder de later heilig verklaarde Willibrord, het christelijk geloof verspreiden. Vanaf die tijd zijn het niet alleen archeologische vondsten maar ook – meer of minder betrouwbare – teksten die iets vertellen over het verloop van de kerstening vanuit Utrecht.

Philokalia [12]

Gregorios Palamas (1296-1359)

Gregorios Palamas sluit de Philokalia (Deel IV) af met zes geschriften. Hij is vooral bekend geworden door zijn dispuut met de monnik Barlaam over het Ongeschapen Licht. Zijn betekenis voor de Orthodoxie is zo groot dat de Kerk de Tweede Zondag in de Grote Vasten de Zondag van Gregorios Palamas genoemd heeft.

PalamasContrary to Barlaam, Gregory asserted that the prophets in fact had greater knowledge of God, because they had actually seen or heard God himself. Addressing the question of how it is possible for humans to have knowledge of a transcendent and unknowable God, he drew a distinction between knowing God in his essence (in Greek, ουσια) and knowing God in his energies (in Greek, ενεργειαι). He maintained the Orthodox doctrine that it remains impossible to know God in his essence (God in himself), but possible to know God in his energies (to know what God does, and who he is in relation to the creation and to man), as God reveals himself to humanity. In doing so, he made reference to the Cappadocian Fathers and other early Christian writers.

St. Gregory Palamas Cathedral, Thessaloniki, Greece, where the saint’s holy relics are enshrinedGregory further asserted that when the Apostles Peter, James and John witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor, that they were in fact seeing the uncreated light of God; and that it is possible for others to be granted to see that same uncreated light of God with the help of repentance, spiritual discipline and contemplative prayer, although not in any automatic or mechanistic fashion.
 
He continually stressed the Biblical vision of the human person as a united whole, both body and soul. Thus, he argued that the physical side of hesychastic prayer was an integral part of the contemplative monastic way, and that the claim by some of the monks of seeing the uncreated light was indeed legitimate. Like St. Simeon the New Theologian, he also laid great stress in his spiritual teaching on the vision of the divine light.

Hesaias de kluizenaar: over de bewaking van het verstand

bewakingHet oudste geschrift dat in de Philokalia is opgenomen, staat op naam van een zekere Hesaias de kluizenaar Men is het er nog steeds niet over eens wie deze Hesaias moet zijn geweest. Sinds 1899 gaat men er over het algemeen van uit dat hij een kluizenaar uit Gaza was die in 488 stierf. Volgens een andere opvatting gaat het hier om een andere Hesaias, namelijk die van de Sketis en dat zijn werkje (27 paragrafen) dateert van omstreeks 400.

( … ) 8.Wanneer het verstand bevrijd is van elke hoop op de wereld van de zichtbare dingen, is dat een teken dat de zonde in u gestorven is.
 
9. Wanneer het verstand bevrijd is, verdwijnt het beletsel dat zich tussen hem en God bevindt.
 
10. Wanneer het verstand bevrijd is van al zijn vijanden en de sabbatsrust geniet, verkeert het in een nieuw tijdperk en schouwt nieuwe en onsterfelijke zaken.
‘Wanneer het verstand bevrijd is van elke hoop op de wereld van de zichtbare dingen, is dat een teken dat de zonde in u gestorven is.’

15. Ik smeek u, laat uw hart zolang u in uw lichaam verblijft, toch niet onbewaakt. De boer kan er nooit zeker van zijn dat zijn akker enige vrucht zal dragen, want hij weet niet wat hem nog boven het hoofd hangt voordat hij alles in zijn schuur heeft opgeslagen. Zo mag ook de mens zijn hart niet onbewaakt laten zolang hij adem in zijn neus heeft. De mens weet niet met welke geestelijke hartstocht hij nog te maken zal krijgen voor zijn laatste ademtocht. Daarom mag hij zijn hart niet onbewaakt laten zolang hij ademt. Neen, hij moet altijd tot God roepen om hulp en om Zijn barmhartigheid. ( … )
