The etching exists in two different versions, both of which bear the address of Chéreau’s widow. The prints in the series were immensely popular from the moment they were published. This evidently prompted the decision to issue a revised edition in order to meet the increased demand. In the first version the scene is framed like a trompe l’oeil to match the interior decoration in the cabinet of the Duc de Picquigny, whereas the illustration in the second version on offer here has a rectangular format and has been extended on all four sides to incorporate additional pictorial elements. A very fine impression with narrow margins. Minor defects, an unobtrusive smoothed fold on the recto as well as minor creasing, otherwise in excellent condition.

Around the mid-1740s Baumgartner produced seven mythological / allegorical series for the renowned publishing house of Johann Georg Hertel, including the present complete series on The Four Elements. This provides a vivid illustration of how rocaille ornamentation became the dominant stylistic feature in Baumgartner’s formal idiom. With apparently effortless ease and using constantly changing, imaginative variations the artist combines the bizarre decorative borders with the personifications of the four elements to form an organic synthesis. The suite is rare and not included in Nagler’s list. Superb, harmonious impressions with the full paper margins. Minor ageing, otherwise in immaculate condition.

Göz’s series of engravings on The Horrors of War was extremely popular in the 18th century and appeared in a total of three editions. Nonetheless, the suite is now of exquisite rarity and only a very few complete impressions have survived. Incomplete series are to be found in Berlin (Kunstbibliothek, Ornamentstichsammlung and Deutsches Historisches Museum). We were able to verify complete series in Augsburg (Kunstsammlungen und Museen), Munich (Graphische Sammlung) and New York (The Metropolitan Museum).
