medische gravures uit Les Oeuvvres d’ Ambroise Paré

Ambroise Paré (1509-1590) was een van de grootste chirurgen van de Renaissance. Na Abu’l Qasim al-Zahrawi zou hij de eerste zijn geweest die slagaders afbond bij amputaties en oorlogswonden niet langer met kokende olie behandelde. In de National Library of Medicine ontdekte ik een gedigitaliseerde versie van Les Oeuvvres d’ Ambroise Paré uit 1585 met daarin een gravure van een voor die tijd geavanceerde handprothese.

Ambroise ParéAmbroise Paré (1509-1590) begon op 19-jarige leeftijd als barbier in het Hôtel-Dieu te Parijs. Toen hij daar ervaring had opgedaan, werd hij in 1537 militair barbier. In 1540 werd hij meester-barbier. Ongeveer tien jaar later kende het college van Saint-Côme hem de titel toe van meester in chirurgie. Hierdoor verwierf hij academische erkenning en daarbij een hogere sociale status. Gedurende ongeveer 30 jaar bleef hij een gewone chirurg, daarna werd hij de eerste chirurg van vier Franse koningen: Hendrik II, Frans II, Karel IX en Hendrik III.

The works of British Outsider Art presented here at Halle Saint Pierre celebrate the unique vision of a mere handful of the many highly original creators working away from the public eye in Britain today, and honour those Art Brut creators of years gone by to whom we look back with wonder and delight. A far cry from the Brit Art revolution, here are the intimate expressions of those unaffected by styles or trends. Their influence is filtering through slowly seeping into the consciousness and creations of mainstream artists. We can only hope that in years to come these passionate creations will gain the recognition they deserve in their own country, and that in Britain there will emerge a permanent museum dedicated to the exhibition and study of which this art is so deserving.
