met de score van Miles Davis

Prachtige late film noir die in plaats van spruitjeslucht het rauwe gezicht van jaren vijftig toont. Met de legendarische score van Miles Davis die de nachtelijke zoektocht van de hoofdpersoon door de straten van Parijs boven de tijd doet uitstijgen, als een existentialistische metafoor van het bestaan zelf.

Ascenseur pour l’échafaud van Louis Malle stond aan het begin van la nouvelle vague terwijl de muziek van Miles Davis het begin van the cool inluidde. En het betekende ook de grote doorbraak van Jeanne Moreau.

Miles Davis zat in Parijs voor optredens. Miles hield van de stad. En via zijn liefje Juliette Greco werd hij aan Louis Malle voorgesteld. Louis bleek groot fan van Miles te zijn en dus vroeg hij Miles de muziek voor Ascenseur pour l„échafaud te schrijven.

Miles ontving vervolgens van Louis de rushes (tijdelijke gemonteerde beelden) en begon te componeren. Dit resulteerde in een aantal inmiddels beroemde thema’s. ( Bron: .marcoraaphorst.nl )

The connections are in the form as well as in specific events of the film and the score. The black and white film is a simple and dramatic mode that relies on the stark contrast to create the scenes. This can be said in some respect of Davis’s instrumentation, as the trumpet is a simple only three valves capable of making a variety of sounds. The greatest connection is that Davis uses the lack of sound as much as the presence of his notes to create emphasis on the notes that he selects, which is quite similar to the black and white nature of the film technology in the fifties. The direct relationships between musical events and the film events are more obvious to the viewer by the choices that Davis makes as to where he should play and when he should leave the film silent. The notes Davis plays are often indicative of the feelings of the characters especially during moments of tension and exuberance. The music also has common presence as music would in most settings, such as in the bars or as the car stereo when the very first music is introduced to the film.

De film gebruikt muziek, foto’s, beeldmateriaal van de thuisomgeving van Nick Drake en interviews met zijn naasten om de triomfen en tragedie te laten zien van zijn korte, intense leven. Singer-songwriter Nick Drake was een van de meest tragische romantici van de rockmuziek, wiens erfenis bestaat uit drie albums vol intens schone en melancholische muziek. Hij stierf op 26-jarige leeftijd aan een overdosis antidepressiva. Toch is het nog steeds niet duidelijk of hij zelf een hand had in zijn dood.
