Crinoline: Fashion’s Most Magnificent Disaster

Halverwege de negentiende eeuw bereikte de hoepelrok of crinoline haar hoogtepunt. In het Tweede Franse Keizerrijk (1852-1870) herleefde de barok en het rococo en de crinoline paste daar perfect in. Ook de Victorianen waren er dol op. Voor de vrouwen was het vaak minder leuk om een crinoline te dragen.

Crinoline: Fashion’s Most Magnificent Disaster is a 3-D exploration of one of fashion’s most disastrous yet most celebrated garments, the Crinoline. Featuring contributions from Vivienne Westwood and Zandra Rhodes, this book is published to coincide with the V&A’s highly anticipated exhibition, Undressed: 350 Years of Underwear Fashion. Brian May as well as being a rock legend, is also an expert on stereo photography.

de oudste foto van Londen: een daguerreotype uit 1839

Op de website van het Victoria & Albert Museum vond ik de oudste foto uit de collectie en tegelijkertijd de oudste foto van London. Het is een opname van Parliament Street uit 1839 van de Fransman M. de St.Croix. Net als op de beroemde foto van Louis Daguerre van de Boulevard du Temple uit 1838 lijkt het uitgestorven op straat. Schijn bedriegt: door de lange sluitertijd (enkele minuten) zijn de meeste voorbijgangers vervluchtigd al zijn er van sommigen sporen waar te nemen.

This is the oldest photograph in the Museum’s collection. It is a daguerreotype, a unique image formed on a silvered copper plate. The daguerreotype was the first photographic process, publicised in January 1839. It was named after its inventor, Louis Daguerre. Just a few weeks after the French Government revealed the secrets of daguerreotypy in Paris in August 1839, Monsieur de St Croix organized the first public demonstration of the process in London. This is therefore among the very first photographs taken in London. The scene is reversed – as is characteristic of the process – and the image on the shiny surface is difficult to read. However, once caught at the correct angle, amazing detail emerges. In the foreground there is a statue of Charles I and in the distance the royal Banqueting House. There are also traces of the people who stayed still long enough to register on the exposure, which probably lasted some minutes.

Op History in Moments kwam ik een fraaie foto tegen uit 1916 van de USS Arizona voor de skyline van Manhattan.

Op de achtergrond vlnr Singer Building (1908), Woolworth Building (1913) en Manhattan Municipal Building (1915). In 1908 was het Singer Building (1908) heel even het hoogste gebouw ter wereld, maar in 1916 was het overtroffen door het Woolworth Building

Het hypermoderne slagschip was in 1915 te water gelaten maar nam geen deel aan Eerste Wereldoorlog. De USS Arizona is vooral bekend door zijn tragische ondergang tijdens de Japanse aanval op Pearl Harbour . Sindsdien ligt het als Memorial op de plek waar het op 7 december 1941 getorpedeerd werd.
