De weblog Out of the past van Raquel bestaat al bijna tien jaar en heeft haar focus op de film tussen 1920 en 1970. Vandaag schrijft ze over een van mijn favoriete schrijvers, Raymond Chandler, de geestelijk vader van private eye Phillip Marlowe, die door Humprey Bogart in The Big Sleep (1946) eeuwigheidsstatus heeft gekregen.

The Big Sleep werd in 1939 Chandler’s grote doorbraak, gevolgd door Farewell my lovely in het jaar daarop. Beide romans werden kort daarop verfilmd, de laatste als Murder my sweet in 1944. Philip Marlowe werd in deze film gespeeld door Dick Powell. Twee jaar later kwam de legendarische vertolking van Humprey Bogart in The Big Sleep.

In 1947 werd ook Chandler‘s roman The Lady in the Lake uit 1943 verfilmd. Marlowe werd hier gespeeld door Robert Montgomery. We zien hem in deze film echter maar een paar keer verschijnen op momenten dat hij voor een spiegel staat. Want The Lady in the Lake is consequent vanuit de ogen van de hoofdpersoon gefilmd. Deze hypersubjectieve Point of View komt nogal geforceerd over en is daarna ook niet veel meer toegepast.

I enjoyed reading about Raymond Chandler’s work as a novelist, short story writer and screenwriter especially. Hollywood came knocking and Chandler got a gig as a screenwriter at Paramount. His first project was working with Billy Wilder on adapting Cain’s Double Indemnity for the big screen. But Chandler got a rough start in Hollywood. He couldn’t see eye-to-eye with anyone and when Double Indemnity was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar he didn’t even show up to the ceremony. Yet is work continued as he adapted The Blue Dahlia, And Now Tomorrow, The Unseen and other movies. He briefly worked on the adaptation of his own novel The Lady in the Lake. Always an admirer of Hitchcock, he was thrilled to work with him on adapting Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train but the two butted heads and Chandler was kicked off the project. Chandler might not have appreciated the modest success of his novels and film adaptations at the time because he could not forsee the fame and recognition that was to come.
