Veel fans bewonderen hun idool dermate, dat ze ook uiterlijk op hun voorbeeld willen lijken. Er zijn ook bewonderaars die meer een innerlijke band met hun idool hebben. Hoe dan ook, op den duur gaan ook zij op hun voorbeeld lijken. Dat dacht ik toen ik zondag Ronald Brautigam bij Kunststof TV zag. Een bescheiden leerling die ijverig de meester interpreteert en zelf transparant probeert te blijven. Niet voor niets kiest Brautigam voor de pianoforte om zo dicht mogelijk bij Beethoven te blijven.

Brautigam speelt Beethoven
Probeer maar eens Beethoven te spelen én jezelf te blijven. Die wilde haren, berusten ze louter op toeval, is het een bewuste knipoog? Het zijn uiterlijkheden, niet meer maar ook niet minder.
Pianist Ronald Brautigam studeerde in Amsterdam, Londen en de Verenigde Staten. Nog altijd reist hij de wereld over om met orkesten of solo op te treden. In 1984 kreeg hij de Nederlandse Muziekprijs, in 2004 de Cannes Classic Award en in 2006 een Edison. Van Brautigam zijn inmiddels talloze platen verschenen, maar opmerkelijk was zijn ambitie alle pianosonates van Mozart op te nemen. Dat werk is voltooid. Daarom is Brautigam nu bezig het pianowerk van Beethoven op cd vast te leggen. In Kunststof TV speelt Brautigam een deel van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 11 in B Flat Major, Op. 22 Menuet.

test je c-factor: hoe calvinistisch ben ik?

Johannes CalvijnHet Calvijnjaar is losgebarsten en dagblad Trouw besteedt daar uitgebreid aandacht aan. Afgelopen weekend verscheen in het katern Letter & Geest een essay van Lodewijk Dros waarin hij de zwalkende betekenis van het begrip ‘calvinistisch’ onderzoekt: Van geuzennaam tot scheldwoord. Ook stond afgelopen zaterdag in Trouw een rede van premier Balkenende afgedrukt: Dit land dankt zo veel aan Calvijn Op het internet heeft Trouw op haar website een speciaal hoekje voor het Calvijnjaar ingericht, waarin je jezelf kunt testen op de c-factor. Hoe calvinistisch ben je? Je hoort wel eens beweren dat alle Nederlanders calvinistische trekjes hebben, of ze nu protestant, katholiek of humanist zijn. Zelf heb ik de leerstelligheden van Calvijn achter mij gelaten en ben tot het oosters (orthodox) christendom toegetreden. Maar de test weegt mij nog altijd voor 67% calvinistisch en in het geloof zelfs 80%. Gelukkig, het is maar een test! Morgen wordt de test officieel gelanceerd door minister Rouvoet en we mogen nu alvast raden welke percentage hi­j scoort.

Nowhere is it more evident than in the American West, which has always been a symbol of opportunity and freedom. Oil at four dollars a gallon may dominate the headlines, but here it is the lack of water that is an bigger threat to the American future. The West is in the grip of a years-long drought.
 
America’s optimism about its natural resources has always been spiced with clashes over conservation, going back to the first man to navigate the Colorado river, John Wesley Powell. American ingenuity made farming on an industrial scale possible in the early years of the 20th century, but at the cost of making Oklahoma a dust bowl. The Hoover Dam, a modern American miracle which used to provide essential irrigation for farming and for the new city of Las Vegas, is not able to cope with the demand for water any more.

Part Four : What is an American?
Simon Schama looks at the bitter conflict over immigration in American history. Who should be allowed to enter America and call themselves an American has always been one of the nation’s most divisive issues, and it continues to be so at this election. He traces the roots of this conflict to the founding of America.
 
The early settlers were themselves immigrants, but they saw America as fundamentally a white and Protestant nation. Simon looks at the key events that challenged this view: the annexation of parts of Mexico in 1848 that made 100,000 non-whites American citizens, the immigration and subsequent expulsion of the Chinese in the late 19th century, and the massive immigration from Eastern Europe during the industrialisation of the 1920s. Each time there have been those who have insisted America must stay white if it’s to stay true to itself, and each time they have been defeated by the sheer force of history.
 
John F Kennedy defined America as a Nation of Immigrants in 1964 and Simon argues that the candidacy of Barack Obama represents the final triumph of the vision of America as a multi-ethnic nation.
