The PLATFORM six day (June 25 – 30th) program features premieres and retrospectives, rare screenings, guest speakers, exhibitions, workshops with leading artists, parties, a picnic and plenty of opportunities for meeting new friends and likeminded artists. There will be something for everyone, from animation professionals to students, to the general public.
This is an important time for animation with the rapid growth of technology changing our craft every day. Aiming to empower fellow artists, we have created a literal Platform for young and established animators to come together to explore the new challenges and possibilities that contemporary and future technologies bring to animation. Whether the animation has been created for theaters or cell phones or the side of a building, if it is brilliant and interesting, we will show it.

Op de tweede festivaldag, aanstaande dinsdag 26 juni zal Amid Amidi (auteur van het boek Cartoon Modern en de website cartoonbrew.com) de presentatie Design Daze: Mid-Century Modern Design verzorgen:
“Bridging the years between the golden age of 1940s Hollywood theatrical animation and the pop cartoon television shows of the „60s, the „50s was one of the most pivotal decades in animation history. It was a coming of age for the animation art form, a time when cartoons matured both graphically and thematically, pushing beyond the slapstick animal routines that had monopolized the medium for the first half of the 20th century. In this unique two-part program, author and historian Amid Amidi (Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in Fifties Animation) will examine the design triumphs of the era and show why the „50s remains a high watermark for cartoon design and style.
The visual design of animation during the 1950s represents but one aspect of the revolution happening within the art form. Lest anybody think that the era was simply an excuse for graphic flourishes, this screening will illustrate how graphic advances were complemented by a maturation of content. Where animation in earlier decades had been created mostly in the service of humor and entertainment, during the „50s artists discovered the art form’s potential to educate and communicate ideas. They began to create films that reached out to all segments of the American population, from housewives to military personnel, schoolchildren to businessmen.
The program will open with three educational/industrial films produced by United Productions of America, the leading graphic animation studio of the era. Discipline Pays Off (1951), produced for the US Navy, instructs military personnel about the importance of maintaining discipline among the ranks. More Than Meets the Eye (1952), commissioned by CBS Radio, convinces sponsors about the benefits of advertising on the radio. Look Who’s Driving (1954), created for Aetna Casualty and Surety Company, teaches responsible driving to driver’s ed students.”

La science amusante is de titel van drie boekjes geschreven door Tom Tit (pseudoniem van Arthur Good) die vanaf 1890 in Frankrijk werden uitgegeven. Daarin worden eenvoudige natuurkundeproefjes beschreven die iedereen thuis kan uitvoeren. De drie deeltjes werden in het Nederlands vertaald door D.H. Cocheret.
