vorige week werd de orthodoxe priester vader Daniil Sysoev
in Moskou vermoord en raakte zijn assistent zwaar gewond
In the small wooden church, a memorial to the right of the altar marks where an unknown assassin murdered Fr Daniil the night before. Two white and two red roses lie crosswise around bouquets of flowers on the rug where he fell. Meanwhile, on the street outside, believers have laid more bouquets of flowers at the entrance to the church. Announcements of parish events signed by Fr Daniil still hang on the door of the church. Near the church fence, a few cops are on duty to keep order, but, the church is open to anyone who wants to come and pray. Several Russian television crews are on the scene, as well.

Blaise PascalBeroemd is Pascal‘s gedachte over „het hart dat zijn redenen heeft, die de rede niet kent„ (of niet begrijpen kan). En daar bedoelde hij geen kritiek mee op het hart (dat het irrationeel zou zijn, gevoelsmatig zou reageren etc…) nee, daarmee uitte hij zijn verwondering – juist als verstandig mens – voor de verborgen en ongrijpbare logica die het hart heeft en waar het verstand – met alle respect – af moet blijven. Ze is fundamenteel voor het menselijk bestaan.
 
Zelf heeft hij die hartslogica proberen te leren. En één keer is hij door die „andere geest„ die daarbij hoort zo aangegrepen / in z„n nekvel gegrepen / dat het zijn leven veranderd heeft, bijgestuurd. Onvergetelijk. Nooit heeft hij er met iemand over gesproken. We zouden er ook niets van geweten hebben, als zijn huisknecht niet na zijn dood een bobbel in de voering van zijn jas was opgevallen. Hij tornde die open en vond een stukje perkament. In losse woorden, halve zinnen staat daar een poging op om in woorden vast te leggen, wat hij daar heeft meegemaakt.

Blaise Pascal

On 23 November 1654, between 10:30 and 12:30 at night, Pascal had an intense religious vision and immediately recorded the experience in a brief note to himself which began: “Fire. God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not of the philosophers and the scholars” and concluded by quoting Psalm 119:16: “I will not forget thy word. Amen.” He seems to have carefully sewn this document into his coat and always transferred it when he changed clothes; a servant discovered it only by chance after his death.[17] This piece is now known as the Memorial. The story of the carriage accident as having led to the experience described in the Memorial is disputed by some scholars.[18] His belief and religious commitment revitalized, Pascal visited the older of two convents at Port-Royal for a two-week retreat in January 1655. For the next four years, he regularly travelled between Port-Royal and Paris. It was at this point immediately after his conversion when he began writing his first major literary work on religion, the Provincial Letters.
