Zeven jaar geleden was ik voor het eerst in het Metropolitan Museum in New York waar ik mij verbaasde over de hoeveelheid Rembrandts. En in de schuin tegenovergelegen Frick collection zag ik er nog een een paar. Na de Burgeroorlog brak er voor de Amerikanen een tijd van grote welvaart aan, de Gilded Age. De nieuwe rijken begonnen kunst te verzamelen uit Europa. Het is vooral in die tijd dat er scheepsladingen vol Hollandse meesters uit de Zeventiende Eeuw naar de overkant van de oceaan verdwenen. Nu vind ik dat zelf geen ramp. Het is wel jammer dat het museumkaartje zoveel duurder wordt met een vliegticket erbij. Maar de meeste liefhebbers van schilderkunst uit de Gouden Eeuw zullen waarschijnlijk toch niet naar New York gaan.
The Metropolitan Museum is home to the finest collection of Dutch art outside of Europe -including 20 works by Rembrandt himself- and all 228 of these masterpieces are displayed together for the first time in this major special exhibition. The exhibition, which coincides with the publication of the first catalogue of the collection, celebrates Rembrandt’s 400th birthday. On view is a rich array of works dating mostly between 1600 and 1700 -landscapes, genre pictures, still lifes, marine views, portraiture, and historical and biblical paintings- by Rembrandt and other celebrated Dutch masters such as Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Gerard ter Borch, Pieter de Hooch, Jacob van Ruisdael, and Aelbert Cuyp. Gelukkig opent er voor de thuisblijvers volgende maand in het Mauritshuis een tentoonstelling, waar het magistrale portret van Jan Six weer eens publiekelijk wordt getoond. Normaal hangt dit portret in de privécollectie van de familie Six en is het dus ook niet te zien voor degenen die er een museumkaartje én een vliegticket voor over zouden hebben.

Fonda: Yeah. Universal told me, “You can„t just hire your friends, man.“ But the word “virtuoso,“ applied to musical instruments, means something. Like if I want a full string section, he„ll go play fourteen different violins and violas and cellos. So I have one man I have to pay who can do all this work for me! Then they were okay with him. And by the way, on Bruce’s picking hand, his thumb, his index and middle fingers are all stumps. They were blown off in a rocket accident in his backyard when he was a kid. But he had already been playing, so he had the surgeon sort of shave them down a little so he could still finger pick. And that National steel guitar that he favors, and we favored very much in the film because it has such a beautiful tone – how did he get there? He used old electric guitar strings, and this muted picking. So there’s a reason his playing sounds like no one else…
De kans is groot dat u al iets van Bruce Langhorne in huis heeft. Hoewel zijn naam weliswaar niet op de goedkope cd-heruitgaven staat, was Bruce Langhorne wel degelijk van de partij op de beruchte Dylan-elpee Subterranean Homesick Blues. Berucht omdat de jonge Dylan opeens de elektrische gitaar in het o zo brave folkgenre introduceerde. Dat was in het goede jaar 1965, toen hij eigenlijk bij zowat iedere folkmuzikant in Greenwich Village aanklopte. Grootheden als onder anderen Tom Rush, Richie Haven, Eric Andersen, Gordon Lightfoot en Judy Collins maakten gebruik van zijn handige gitaarspel. Een solomuzikant is Langhorne nooit geweest, maar in 1969 componeerde hij wel een korte soundtrack voor Peter Fonda’s verguisde western The Hired Hand, die twee jaar later op het witte doek verscheen. Voor de traditionele begeleidingsmuziek van de film, die Langhorne in zijn garage schreef, werden onder andere banjo’s, viool, gitaar en harmonica gebruikt. De muziek ademt een beklemmende atmosfeer uit.
